Into a new world

Change is inevitable. Change is the law of nature. Last few months saw a lot of change. For starters, the rule of king in Nepal gave way to democracy and first time in the history of Nepal, a maoist president claimed office. The left wing broke out of UPA in India and the CPI[M] expelled one of it's high ranking member, Somnath Chatterjee.

Aside from political changes, the technology saw an uprising over the Apple i-phone 3-G which started the paradigm shift from operators controlling handsets to vice versa. everything is changing. Isn't it?

I decided to change myself. Transform my life. Transform it once and for all. I decided finally to switch to linux. As with any average pc user, i lived on MS windows. I've had used linux before, but never really felt i'd want to use it on my personal pc. But things do cahnge, don't they?

After coming to GECT, which has a computer science department which is an active supporter of free software and the linux community, i was greatly drawn to linux. But that was only because of the curiosity to find what is so hyping about linux.

In the mean time i had installed ubuntu(which was the only one i had) just for horror(courtesy: njekku) a couple of times and uninstalled later, because it couldnt support most of my hardware(though i din't really know untill recently, i was using ubuntu 5. something version).

Things really got moving after RMS came to UC college, aluva. A friend of mine wrote a post about their meeting rms and on the ideals of free software, and we had a heated debate over some ideals which prompted guidance from many experienced free software activists including pramod sir and vivekettan.

After much thought i decided to give linux a real chance and asked my ex-roommate bristow for a dvd. As u can guess, he couldn't give me one. Time passed. Seasons changed. May be by the stroke of fate, i stumbled across ubuntu's free shipping programme.

The rest, you can imagine. I logged in, I registered, and I received. A cd containing the lastest UBUNTU 8.04.1 LTS Desktop Edition. along with four stickers proclaiming "ubuntu, linux for human beings".
I was really happy to see the disk packed in kinda good package from Netherlands. And thanks to bristow and dasappan who inspired me to take this drastic step (he he). And last but not the least, to all of ma cs friends, leading by example, refusing to even install windows as a secondary boot in their systems(i lie pretty.. don't i?).

Will share my experiences with linux later. Any ways, linux, here i caom...(rollz..:D)

A wet fire cracker and the faint pop

A wet fire cracker and the faint pop.(for those people who won't read till last, for the title, courtesy V P.. he threatened me with copyright infringement) It was a sentence that marked the end of two hectic weeks filled with lots of enjoyment, problems and tension. The week was marked by three events.

o Seminar at St.Mary’s College

o Industrial visit to SIFL

o AGM of ISTE

First came the seminar on polymer chemistry at St.Mary’s college, Thrissur. What a mechanical engineer to do at a seminar on Recent Developments in Polymer Chemistry?. Well, there is. To begin with, it was held in St.Mary’s college, which for those who don’t know, is one of the prestigious girls only (read women only) college in the heart of the city. Then two days duty leave (i.e. 12 hours attendance which otherwise would have been marked absent) for sitting in the midst of a hundred beautiful ladies. Then the seminar, being a UGC sponsored one, had value in terms of the participation certificate. There’s also a talk on application of polymers in nanotechnology and electronics which was pretty interesting.

I also had the opportunity to speak in the valedictory function on behalf of our college. Rollz.. :D

The second happening was the industrial visit to SIFL. IV(as we call it) is the short for escape from boring lectures with the added advantage of department sponsored pleasure trip. But this IV, didn’t have he second advantage. We wanted to learn what was happening at SIFL (ok, I for got to mention, SIFL is Steel and Industries Forging Ltd, at Athani), which caters to the needs of many high profile clients in sectors like defense, space technology etc. It was also important to our field of study during the current semester as we are having a paper titled MCF.

The industry interaction went ok, but what marked it important in my week was that it made me sick. I almost fainted inside the forge shop and had to ask payis to help me outside. That blackout wa followed by 3 days of fever, ruining my weekend.

(Photo's are highly confidential. I've put up for the sake of my readers.Kindly don't misuse them.. :D)

The third and the last one consumed most of my two weeks. Not just mine, but also of my friends, giving life to a society that was dead for years. From consolidating the member details to managing the one n only Mr.Dynamic(mite) personality, it was horrible. Though i must say that a software done by my fellow blogger Devidas made things a little easy. But the data entry was still a problem. And 18 hours of lost class(engaged class, which usually is not so) is just the tip of the ice berg.

(I'm a little selfish and have put up a picture of me speaking at the AGM as program coordinator. Hope nobody minds.)

Anyway, the bottom line is, all went fine. ISTE Students chapter now have a convener, joint convener, program coordinator and 14 executive members, my friend Navneenth being the convenor. And if anybody from the college wants to join ISTE, kindly cotact him.

Kuttappan D Gr8

The begging may be all thrash.. But the last but second line, ROCKER....

He is a Malayali working for a multinational company in Mumbai. Not well educated and he is working as a peon. Whenever Kuttappan hears somebody talk he will come in between saying that I know that very well I know him very well like that. One day Kuttappan's Boss a foreign educated person & a North Indian was talking something about Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kuttappan was passing thru that way, suddenly he came in between saying that oh Arni he is
my best friend.Kuttapan' s boss laughed at him saying that how can u be a friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger you are only a peon living in India .
Kuttappan said if u wont believe its your problem I cant help you. Ok.The Manager said I am going on a trip to US next week you come as my assistant and we will go to Arnold 's house and see what happens.Kuttappan agreed with a smile.A week after they landed in US. First they went to NY. Arnold was there in NY. They went to meet Arnold . Seeing Kuttappan Arnold ran towards Kuttappan and hugged him asking that hey Kuttappan long time no see where were you man? Kuttappan went with Arnold to have some coffee.
Boss was stunned. When Kuttappan came back the boss told him that we will go to Clintons place. Let's find out whether u know him or not. Kuttappan agreed with a smile. At Clinton 's home Clinton also did the same as Schwarzenegger asking that where were you my friend for long time? Kuttappan went to have tea with Clinton while the boss was sitting out side the gate.
When Kuttappan came back boss said I have to go to Vatican to get blessings from Pope John Paul, so u come with me. At the Vatican crowd from all over the world is waiting to see Pope John Paul. Kuttappan and his boss are also there. Boss asked Kuttappan, do you know Pope John Paul. Kuttappan said y not? Boss told Kuttappan that he will not believe this. Kuttappan asked
boss to wait for some time and went inside the crowd.
After 15 minutes Kuttappan came on the balcony along with Pope John Paul. Pope John Paul was holding Kuttappan's hand. Kuttappan's boss became unconscious and fell down. When Kuttappan came back his boss was on a stretcher by his side nurses and paramedics. Kuttappan asked Sir what happened.
Then boss told; Kuttappa u know Arnold I believe, u know Clinton I believe and u know Pope John Paul I believe that too but WHEN U CAME WITH POPE AT THE BALCONY THE CROWD WERE ASKING WHO IS HOLDING THE HAND OF KUTTAPPAN after hearing that I became unconscious.
LESSON FROM THIS STORY
NEVER EVER UNDER ESTIMATE A MALAYALI ....

N.B:- it's a long time i put up a post. this is just for the sake of posting. this is the range of chali's that we encounter our day to day life here. An ode to Niju d gr8
